Coving Coving is familiar to everyone. We see it in the grandest houses, and we see it in homes on every road and street in the country. Why is it so popular ? Because it looks good. It enhances almost any room, and no matter what your style, there is a coving to suit you. Originally, coving was introduced to cover up and disguise the joint between the walls and ceiling. The Georgians loved elegance, and that joint was considered uneven and ugly. Coving was the solution. It smoothed the transition between the two surfaces, creating a sense of completeness and continuation. An organic feel to the room. These days, the wall to ceiling joint is usually perfect, but coving still has a place in the modern home. Plastering Wirral provide a full coving service. We can fit coving to the highest standards, and we can also renovate and repair your existing coving. We can also remove coving if its no longer fitting with your decor. We will also advise on the best styles and materials for your coving. Plaster Boarding Plaster boarding is a skill in itself. Most plasterers use plaster boards, but often not to a high standard, and frequently as a cost cutting measure. We will always use them well, and appropriately, and when they are best for the job. Plastering Wirral take great pride in their plaster boarding. Used well, on walls and ceilings, plaster boarding is a great tool in the plasterers armoury. Tape and Jointing This is another skilled job, and one which will have a big impact on the quality of the finished job. It refers to the process of joining the plaster boards together. It can be done mechanically, or by hand, and is an underrated process. Good skills at this stage count for a lot on the overall appearance of the finished plastering job. Rough Casting We mostly know rough casting by its more popular name of pebble dashing. This is one of the most popular forms of render, and is relatively cheap to apply. Pebble dashing really is everywhere. It is just a form of cement render, composed of sand and cement. When its been applied to the wall, small pebbles or shells are pushed into the surface. This creates a very tough and durable render which can easily last fifty years or more. Wet Dash This is anther form of exterior render. Not very common on the Wirral, its more usually seen in the northern parts of the UK. It is a mix of cement and sand, with some gravel added. Its extremely tough and has outstanding durability. Its applied to the wall wet, from the trowel, and although it looks easy, its extremely difficult and requires great skill. Its left unfinished, giving a rough and organic look. Float and Set Also known as wet plastering, every plasterer should be skilled with this technique. Its main use is as a leveller, to create a good surface for tiling or a smooth top coat. It is applied in two stages. The first is a 10mm deep layer, using sand a cement, onto the well prepared bare wall. The second stage is when the first layer is semi-firm, and the plaster top coats are applied. Overall, both stages should be around 25mm thick. Float and set is physically demanding. There is constant mixing and the plasterer must work quickly and efficiently. Its a real skill. We are proud of our float and set.
