Rendering is so common, we barely see it. Its everywhere. People have used render to protect their properties for as long as their has been settled housing. From the Iron Age to the early medieval period, mud and dung was used as render on wooden houses. The Romans used Lime render. The Normans rendered their castles. Render is a very effective material. It does what is supposed to do.
In some countries, the US for example, most rendering is timber. Timber expands and contacts easily, and aids cooling in the summer. It suits the USA with hot summers and cold winters. It wouldn’t work in the UK, where our damp climate would cause rot, although it is sometimes seen in East Anglia. Here, we tend to use mineral renders. They aren’t affected by damp, and they are tough and durable. We also have no limit to the raw materials for mineral render. Cheap and plentiful.
Traditional rendering has changed little in the post-medieval period. Render is easy to apply, relatively cheap, and it works. Fifty years or more is not uncommon for a render coat. Basic routine maintenance aside, it’s an easy and reliable method of coating a house. Why change a product that works ?
That view is now changing. A number of companies have brought modern, high-tech products to the market. These take advantage of new silicones and acrylics, and are intended to bring all the advantages of traditional renders, but with even greater durability, flexibility and even a maintenance free life span. Even an industry as traditional as rendering has now been dragged into the modern era.
Whatever your property, and whatever your budget, there is now a render perfect for you. No matter what finish, texture of colour you need, there will a render that will fit your style and your pocket. Traditional or modern, whatever you need. Its there.
So why would you choose to render your home ?
A well chosen render correctly installed by a trained professional will transform your home, as well as adding value and prestige. Its definitely worth considering.
Which render should I choose ?
In the last decade, the render market has expanded enormously. Modern ? Tradition ? A hybrid ? Silicone or acrylic ? Its almost impossible for the average person to know which to choose. But that’s not a problem. We are experts in rendering. Lets have a chat about your requirements, and work out whats best for you.
These are the main categories and products we use
Most properties rendered in the last hundred years will have been done using a concrete based render. Its cheap and durable, and not hard to apply.
Pebble dash, also known as rough cast, found on every street in the country, is a form of cement render.
Cement render is a mix composed of sand, cement and lime. These are usually mixed in the ratios of 6:1:1. These are cheap raw materials, mixed on site and then applied in three layers. The base layer uses coarse sand, the final layer uses a fine sand.
Cement render lasts for years. But being cement, its completely inflexible. Houses move. The render doesn’t, and will eventually crack. It can be repaired, but eventually it’ll need replacing. That may not be in your lifetime, but its always a consideration.
Lime render is a superb product. It's perhaps the most traditional render in the UK, unless you want to use mud and dung. The Romans brought it with them, and its been used, on and off, ever since.
Lime render is breathable. It allows moisture and damp to move through it, according to the ambient temperature. Most properties built prior to 1910 were intended to breathe. They’ll also have been plastered with lime on the inside, and if there is render, it’ll be lime based. Using a non-breathable render can cause major problems. In the worst-case scenario, it’ll need to be completely removed. Choose wisely. These properties need to breathe.
Flexibility is anther property of lime render. This flexibility prevents cracking, meaning it will last longer. It does need a basic coat of lime wash every four or five years, but other than that its maintenance free. It’s also a natural fungicide, due to its high pH. Mould cannot grow on lime products. Lime products are eco-friendly and sustainable.
The only disadvantage to lime render is it requires greater experience and skill than basic cement renders. This adds to its cost. Its absolutely not a product for an amateur. In the last decade, some companies have introduced high-tech lime render products, intended to make them easier to work with. The addition of silicones in products such as K-Lime, means lime render is now easier to use, and this can only add to its popularity in the future.
Polymer renders are another new innovative product. They are highly flexible, so as a property moves, expanding and contracting, the render can move with it. They are highly durable, and absolutely maintenance free.
Polymer products come in a large range of colours, so there will always be a polymer render to suit your property. All thick-coat renders will crack eventually. Its inevitable. But polymer renders will last for many decades. They are well worth considering.
Acrylic renders are incredibly strong, and almost unbelievably durable. They are new products, known as a thin-coat renders, created using fine acrylic hairs. These hairs lie in many different directions, creating a highly flexible mat within the render. Acrylic render is very unlikely to ever crack. It does not degrade in UV light, and is unaffected by the elements.
Acrylic render forms an absolutely impenetrable barrier to water. It repels moisture, with water being unable to settle on it. This 100% waterproof barrier is a wonder for modern properties, but would be a disaster for older buildings needing to breathe. So choose carefully. They come in a wide range of colours and are maintenance free. They really are a fantastic product.
K-Rend are a British company who have popularised the use of silicone in renders. They are likely the most popular rendering products in the country.
K-Rend manufacture a number of different lines, for every sort of property. They come in a range of colours and finishes, and are extremely durable. Silicone renders are another thick-coat product, so they will eventually crack, but silicones flexibility means that cracking will be many decades away.
Silicone is highly water replant. As with acrylics, water is thrown off the surface of the render. It cannot settle, and it certainly could never soak through. Its 100% waterproof.
It should be stated that K-Rend products are intended for professional application. They are not intended to be used by amateurs.
Its no surprise. There are so many products on the market, and so many options. Do you need breathable ? Do you need flexible ? Which product suits both your property and your budget ? We booked Plastering Wirral to do the rendering on our house. It was the best solution to the problems we were having. They used K-Rend and we have no complaints. The house looks great now. The price was extremely competitive. Not the cheapest, but they were definitely the best
The render was falling off our house. It was badly cracked and had been patched all over. Plastering Wirral removed it and applied new render. The house looks extremely good. Like a new house. We are very happy with their workmanship and the price. The whole process was good
Highly Recommend Them
We had acrylic render applied by Plastering Wirral. There were various issues with our property, and it took a while to decide on the correct course of action. Their customer service was good and they took a lot of time to investigate the best product for us. We highly recommend them
